Vijlbrief belonged to the Avant-Garde Painters of the 1960s. The power and work of Vijlbrief’s work is comparable to that of the CoBrA painters, with whom he also exhibited in the 1950s (including Corneille, Karel Appel, Alechinsky and others).

Work hangs in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, The Cobra Museum, Gemeente Museum in Utrecht and the National Collection in Ibiza, among others.
